The curriculum is directed at existing safety professionals with at least five (5) years’ experience in the field – a minimum require- ment to complete the OSHA Outreach Trainer courses. Professionals with the desire to excel in mid-level management and leader- ship positions in safety with the need for skills used to implement safety standards in their workplace are highly encouraged to apply.
The Professional Safety and Health Officer certificate will help existing safety professionals achieve their career goals. This program enables students to apply new leadership and training skills which will encourage a safe environment in their workplace.

Industry Certification
All courses offered have been approved for:
- American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Certification Maintenance (CM) points
- Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) Continuance of Certification (COC) points
- Bureau of Registered Nurses (BRN) credit
Time to Complete
Can be completed in as little as three to six months, although many students prefer to take one year or longer. Students have five (5) years to complete the certificate from the date of the first class taken.
IMPORTANT: In order for a student to be awarded his/her Certificate in the PSHO program, he/she must be a current authorized Outreach Trainer in the construction industry and/or general industry at the UC San Diego OTI Education Center.

*Excludes the $95 certificate fee. This approximate cost is for one industry track/specialization. Additional costs are required for additional tracks.
Transfers/Substitutions
The OSHA Training Institute Education Center / OS&H Department at UCSD Diego Division of Extended Studies will allow up to two (2) OTIEC courses to be transferred/substituted from another authorized OTIEC into the PSHO program*. If a student is intending to complete more than one specialization (track), the policy of a total of two transfers still applies.
*Exception to the transfer/substitution policy:
The OSHA 500, 501, 502 and 503 trainer courses are not allowed to be transferred from another OTIEC.
