Safety and Health Fundamentals
The certificate program in Safety and Health Fundamentals supports OSHA's mission by training employees in occupational safety and health to reduce incident rates for workers in state and local governments and private industry workers. Participants have the opportunity to earn certificates for Construction, General Industry and Maritime training.
Participants can choose from a variety of topics such as occupational safety and health standards for the construction, general industry or maritime, safety and health management, accident investigation, fall hazard awareness, and recordkeeping. Courses are available at OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers nationwide.

CONSTRUCTION - Participants must successfully complete a minimum of 7 OTI Education Center courses, comprised of required and elective courses that include a minimum of 68 contact hours of training.

GENERAL INDUSTRY - Participants must successfully complete a minimum of 7 OTI Education Center courses, comprised of required and elective courses that include a minimum of 68 contact hours of training.

Participants must complete the 3 required courses for a minimum of 39 contact hours of training.

Participants must complete a minimum of 4 elective courses and must include a minimum of 29 contact hours of training.
MARITIME - Participants must successfully complete a minimum of 7 OTI Education Center courses, comprised of required and elective courses that include a minimum of 77 contact hours of training.

How to Obtain Your Certificate(s)
- COMPLETE THE APPLICATION - Upon completion of required courses, fill out the respective application form (Construction, General Industry or Maritime).
- PAYMENT - There will be a $95 program processing fee upon completion for each industry specialization. Students may process this fee in their My Extension account.
- SUBMIT - Email the completed application form and supporting documentation to oshatraining@ucsd.edu. Please allow a minimum of three weeks for your submission to be audited by the OTI Education Center and reported to OSHA.
- Note: Due to the increase in popularity of the Safety and Health Fundamentals Certificate Program, OSHA is experiencing a high volume of approved submissions. There may be a delay in receiving your certificate.
