Emergency Incident Management & Leadership

UC San Diego Extended Studies is partnering with San Diego Miramar College and State Fire Training to offer the Instructor Development series. These courses are designed to meet the needs of public safety officials and beyond, helping participants learn the latest innovative teaching strategies while fulfilling the minimum requirements to teach in the State Fire Training system.

Emergency Incident Courses

Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 1: Instructional Methodology | $650

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the intermediate level professional instrucments, teach and deliver instruction, evaluate and coach other instructors, and analyze resources and formulate a program budget.
 

Fire and Emergency Services Instructor 2: Instructional Development | $650

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the intermediate level professional instructor to safely, effectively, and competently develop lesson plans and evaluation instruments, teach and deliver instruction, evaluate and coach other instructors, and analyze resources and formulate a program budget.
 

Ethical Leadership for Fire and Emergency Services Instructors | $300
FPM 40719

This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to identify the value of ethical behavior in instructional settings, describe how ethical norms influence individual ethics, identify a personal ethical perspective and core  values and how they impact communication and ethical decision making, and make an ethical decision using an ethical decision-making model, in order to assist in making ethical decisions when faced with an ethical dilemma in an instructional setting and carry out the roles and responsibilities of an SFT instructor in an ethical manner.
 

Group Dynamics for Fire and Emergency Services Instructors | $595

This course provides the skills and knowledge is designed to develop leadership skills; group dynamics, problem-solving techniques, and interpersonal relations are utilized in staff meetings, brainstorming sessions, and conference meetings. Skills are developed for conducting formal public meetings, panel discussions, and forums.
 

Employing Audiovisual Aids for Fire and Emergency Services Instructors | $595
FPM-40721

This course covers the principles and selection of media in the instructional  process, employment of basic and advanced forms of instructional media, use of computers in the instructional process, and individualized instruction programs. Teaching demonstrations are required of all participants.
 

Techniques of Evaluations for Fire and Emergency Services Instructors | $595
FPM 40722

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the intermediate level professional instructor to perform his or her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 1041  Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications and the 2012 edition of NFPA 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions. At the end of this course, candidates for Instructor II certification will be able to develop lesson plans and evaluation instruments, teach and deliver instruction, and evaluate and coach other instructors. The Instructor II will also be able to analyze resources and formulate a program budget.
