Every year thousands of workers face hot working conditions leading to illness and sometimes even death. This preventable exposure has recently received considerable attention and poses a risk to both outdoor and indoor workers. This course provides health and safety professionals and supervisory employees with in-depth information regarding heat stress. Topics include how heat affects the body, personal risk factors, methods used to measure environmental heat, methods used to conduct physiological monitoring, the spectrum of control measures, and how to develop and implement a heat stress program. The course will also discuss the status of the National Emphasis Program and the proposed federal regulations on heat stress. Case studies, exercises, and videos will be used throughout the course to facilitate the learning objectives.

Over 30 years experience in the field of occupational and environmental health and safety.

Suzy has over 30 years of experience in the field of occupational and environmental health and safety. She has worked in both government and private industry as a trainer and project manager in the areas of construction, maintenance, disaster response, heat stress, infectious disease hazard reduction (including COVID-19), law enforcement, laboratory, office, health care, sewage treatment, landfill operations, and hazardous waste remediation. In addition to technical expertise, Suzy’s experience includes management, outreach, and adult education. Ms. Shamsky has a Master of Public Health and is a certified industrial hygienist (CIH) and certified safety professional (CSP).
