OSHA 5400 - Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Maritime Industry

This course is designed for individuals interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour Maritime safety and health Outreach Training Program to their employees and other interested groups.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Special emphasis is placed on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour Outreach Training Program as well as the most hazardous in the maritime industry using OSHA Maritime Standards as a guide.

Students are briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids and handouts.

This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Training Program, to conduct 10- and 30-hour maritime classes in shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants after verifying course completion.

Students in OSHA #5400 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry who wish to participate as authorized Outreach Trainer Program trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must successfully prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA maritime industry Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end of the course.

REQUIRED PREREQUISITES

Verification of Prerequisite Form must include:

  • OSHA 5410 course completed within the past 7 years.

  • Five (5) years of maritime safety experience. The following may be substituted for two years of experience: A degree in occupational safety and health from an accredited college or university, certification a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or a Certified Marine Chemist (CMC) may be substituted for two (2) years of work related experience.

Notes: Beginning September 1, 2024, the VILT (Virtual Instructor Led Training) classes at the UC San Diego OTIEC are available to anyone who lives or works in the newly realigned OSHA San Francisco Region: Alaska, American Samoa, Arizona, California, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Additionally, if you are a current Outreach Trainer with UCSD, regardless of your residence, you are still eligible to attend a Trainer Update Course (OSHA 502, OSHA 503, OSHA 5402).

This is a national VILT class and a collaboration between all of the OSHA Training Institute Education Centers (OTIECs). Students from all OSHA regions and Education Centers are welcome to apply to attend through your regional OTIEC. Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) classes are overseen with the same guidelines & policies as in-person offerings. Per OSHA guidelines, students are required to have video capabilities and must be visible at all times.If a student cannot comply with this requirement they will not be able to attend class.
