OSHA 521 - OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene

This course covers industrial hygiene practices and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Course topics include recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic hazards, Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL), OSHA health standards, respiratory protection, engineering controls, OSHA sampling protocols and strategies, and workplace health program elements. The course features workshops in health hazard recognition, OSHA health standards and use of sampling equipment. Upon course completion students will have the ability to recognize basic industrial hygiene principles and practices, identify characteristics of common air contaminants, locate PELs, perform basic industrial hygiene calculations, and determine methods for hazard control and abatement.
Recommended prerequisite course: OSHA 510, OSHA 511, OSHA 5109 or OSHA 5119. It is also highly recommended to have a calculator for the class.

Certified Industrial Hygienist and Advisor for Safety and Emergency Services at Sempra Energy Utilities
Brian Heramb is a Certified Industrial Hygienist in Comprehensive Practice who has been dedicated to protecting human health and the environment for over 45 years. He has extensive experience assessing health and safety hazards and establishing engineering/administrative/PPE solutions and communicating on hazards in gas and electric utilities, construction, aerospace and military facilities.
He has served as the program manager for comprehensive control of a wide range of hazards including asbestos, lead, pesticides, confined spaces, ergonomics, hearing conservation, electric arc flash, and respiratory protection. He has had principal responsibility for writing corporate health/safety policies and procedures, testified at Cal/OSHA standards hearings, and participated in advisory committees. Brian has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), serves as a member of the AIHA Confined Spaces Committee, and is a Registered Specialist - Exposure Decision Analysis. His chapter “Health & Safety Issues of New Energy Technologies” was published in Patty’s Industrial Hygiene, 7th Edition, 2021 (Barbara Cohrssen, Editor).
