OSHA 5119 - Cal/OSHA Standards for General Industry

Developed in partnership with Cal/OSHA, this 4-day course emphasizes Title 8 General Industry standards and compliance. Topics include IIPP, Ergo, Electrical and many others. The course also provides existing Fed OSHA trainers an endorsement authorizing them to teach 10 & 30 hr Cal/OSHA outreach courses. Resources and Cal/OSHA training guidelines will be covered.

Individuals who wish to be authorized by OSHA to teach the Cal/OSHA versions of the 10- and 30-hour General Outreach Training Program classes must fulfill the following requirements:

1. Be a current authorized OSHA General Industry Outreach Training Program trainer OR become an authorized OSHA General Industry Outreach Training Program trainer within six (6) months after completing OSHA 5119 class. Trainers should note that the Cal/OSHA Partnership endorsement expires on the same date as their authorized Outreach trainer card.

2. Have at least one year of verifiable safety and health experience with an organization governed by Cal/OSHA standards. Outreach Trainers will be required to sign a “Statement of Eligibility” form, prior to, or in their Cal/OSHA Partnership authorization course.

3. Complete OSHA #5119 Cal/OSHA Standards for General Industry. Outreach trainers are not required to take the Cal/OSHA Partnership Trainer course from the same OTI Education Center from which they took their Federal General Outreach Training Program trainer course. Trainer will receive a separate card indicating their trainer authorization.

Trainers who receive their OSHA Outreach Training Program trainer card after completing OSHA #5119 Cal/OSHA Standards for General Industry class must contact the OTI Education Center which sponsored the Cal/OSHA Partnership class they participated in to sign a “Statement of Eligibility” form and receive their Cal/OSHA General Industry Outreach trainer card.

Travel plans must accommodate the course end time.

Note:

Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) classes are overseen with the same guidelines & policies as in-person offerings. Per OSHA guidelines, students are required to have video capabilities and must be visible at all times.If a student cannot comply with this requirement they will not be able to attend class. Students are required to attend all days/times to receive a completion certificate and/or trainer card and must participate via computer. Phones & tablets are not allowed. Dates: 3/24/25-3/27/25

Instructor: John Marsden, CHST, COSS, CET

John Marsden, CHST, COSS, CET

John has instructed health and safety classes for over 15 years to a wide range of construction crafts all over the country.

John Marsden has been with the UC San Diego OSHA Training Institute Education Center since 2013. He teaches the Safety Leadership courses and OSHA standards and trainer courses.

John's career includes over 20 years as a union steamfitter. He worked mostly as HVAC assistant service manager for 3 different companies over 15 years. Additionally, John is a Nuclear trained Submarine qualified U.S. Navy veteran.

He taught for 20 years as an apprenticeship and journeyman for United Association District Council 16. He also instructed safety and health for United Association as a Master Safety Instructor. John is the owner and lead instructor of Marsden Master Safety Training.

John is a certified Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) and a Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT) as well as being a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) and Certified Occupational Safety Manager (COSM). John is a NESHA Master Instructor and Master Safety Professional. He has held a California vocational state teaching credential.

Charles Geraci

Charles Geraci is the Regional Security and Business Protection Lead along with his EHS responsibilities for the Pfizer Inc site in La Jolla, CA. Charles has over 30 years of professional experience in the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) field and received his bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety Sciences from Indiana University of PA. Charles also has numerous Safety, Security, and Business Continuity certifications. He has been an instructor for the OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) for over 10 years with his focus courses being the OSHA 511, 5119, and 501 Outreach Instructor Class. Charles is a very passionate instructor who wishes to impart his EHS wisdom to his students taking his courses.
