About the Interpersonal Leadership, Teamwork, and Communication Program
In today’s job market, an increasing number of companies seek candidates with strong power skills to complement their technical skills and expertise. Qualities such as effective communication, self-awareness, time management, and the ability to function on diverse and collaborative teams are highly sought-after across all fields. This certificate in Interpersonal Leadership, Teamwork, and Communication is designed to equip participants with those skills to help them excel in any working environment.
Throughout this program, students will develop and apply critical power skills—such as leadership, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. They will work in teams to manage hands-on projects aligned with current industry needs, gaining practical experience. The program will also provide opportunities for students to engage with organizations and field experts, expanding their professional networks and demonstrating their newly honed capabilities. By the program’s completion, students will be fully equipped to accelerate their careers, with the skills and confidence to thrive in today’s competitive job market.

Program Objectives
- Understand your strengths, preferences, styles, and areas for development to improve your leadership capacity
- Discover best approaches to make teams work together and how to improve their dynamics
- Enhance presentation skills by developing effective messaging and perfecting delivery according to the audience
- Develop an appreciation for individuals with different roles and responsibilities in interdisciplinary projects
- Learn to communicate effectively and efficiently with fellow team members, direct reports, and stakeholders, who may have different backgrounds and areas of expertise
- Gain an understanding of Project Management tools and techniques
- Practice your newly acquired skills and build your resume while making an impact through a real life project

Conditions for Admission
Any UC San Diego graduate student or postdoctoral scholar in good standing is eligible to considered for acceptance into the program. To ensure a diverse cohort, applicants will be evaluated based upon:
- Year in program and/or advancement to candidacy status
- Area of study or research interest
- Employment & volunteer history
- Statement of interest
Certificate Guidelines
The application deadline for the 2024-2025 cohort is TBD pending the finalization of course dates. Applications are due approximately one month before the course begins.
Next Steps Experience
This certificate is part of a campus-wide initiative called Gradvantage. Gradvantage was designed to provide a suite of resources to help participants develop essential leadership, teamwork, and communication skills to become successful leaders in their field. The Gradvantage program also includes monthly Career Nights to network with industry professionals, communication workshops, and other programs and resources.
Gradvantage is partnership between the UC San Diego Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Graduate & Professoinal Student Association, Career Services Center, Office of Postdoctoral Scholar Affairs, and the Division of Extended Studies. FAQs
Any current UC San Diego graduate student or postdoctoral scholar in good standing is eligible to be considered for acceptance into the Leadership and Teamwork certificate program. Each year, one cohort of forty students will be admitted into the program.
At this time, only current UC San Diego graduate students and postdocs are permitted to participate in the Leadership and Teamwork certificate program. Applicants who are not current UC San Diego graduate students or postdocs will not be admitted.
