Serving the Underserved
We support the UC San Diego School of Medicine's long-term vision to improve healthcare for underserved Americans. Students from underrepresented or socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and students who are interested in providing healthcare to underserved communities are particularly encouraged to apply.
The AAMC/AMCAS defines underrepresented populations as "those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population."
Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations are defined as those groups that have been underserved in the past. This included individuals who are the first in their family to obtain higher education, those who lived in underserved rural areas until they were 18, as well as African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans (Amerindians, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians) and mainland Puerto Ricans.
Additional Commitments
The full-time focus of the program is on upper division science coursework, seminars, workshops, MCAT preparation and medical school applications.
The intensity of this unique program does not allow for participants to re-take required premedical courses, to expand their extracurricular portfolio, or to hold employment.
International Students
International students may be considered for the program. International students need to have a degree from a school in the United States. If an international student is admitted to the UC San Diego Post Bacc Premed Program, he/she must understand at the outset that admission to a U.S. medical school may be difficult. Please visit the following website that provides guidance for international students seeking to enter U.S. medical schools:
Undocumented and DACAmented Students
The UC San Diego Post-Bac program welcomes and supports students of all backgrounds without regard to their immigration status. We welcome all interested individuals to apply and we do not require students to provide proof of citizenship.
