Osher Book Club

Speaker Martin Mark
The Osher Book Club will discuss Geraldine Brooks’s much-praised novel, Horse. Having spent 30 years living in Lexington, Kentucky, Osher member Dr. Martin Mark will talk about the invisibility of the black horse jockeys and trainers, the people responsible for the huge earnings and accumulated wealth of the white horse owners. But only the owners were publicly acknowledged—and rewarded—for these successes. As he also notes, Kentucky’s location, sitting right on the Mason Dix on line, was a strong influence on the ambivalence the state had towards both sides as state residents grappled with loyalty to the confederacy versus the union.
