Elder Fraud: Don’t Fall For It

Oleksandra “Sasha” Johnson, JD In 2024 the FBI reported receiving almost 150,000 complaints of fraud from folks older than 60, with losses close to 4.9 BILLION dollars. This lecture will discuss the investigation and prosecution of elder fraud cases in federal court. It will describe the various methods of elder abuse used by criminals, including by mail, computer, phone, TV, radio and in person. It will provide an overview of the types of financial fraud schemes currently trending in Southern California, such as grandparent scams, romance scams and investment scams. Finally, it will discuss how to avoid financial abuse.
Speaker Bio
Oleksandra “Sasha” Johnson, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, with the U.S. Department of Justice, is currently assigned to the Major Fraud and Public Corruption Section in the Southern District of California. She supervises investigations and litigates complex fraud matters. She received an MA from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and her law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.
