Charles Dickens: Travels in America
Professor Jeanie Grant Moore
When Charles Dicken—a young radical eager to observe first-hand a relatively new country based on democratic principles—first traveled to America, he found much to admire but at other times he was harshly critical. His first-hand exposure to enslaved persons being bought and sold was his biggest disappointment. His journey provided enough material for a non-fiction book, American Notes, and a novel, Martin Chuzzlewit. Both are filled with perceptive observations, amusing accounts, and piercing satire. His travels influenced him significantly—in his work, his personal life, and his political beliefs.
