Spanish Conversations: Literary Café

Explore the rich and wide-ranging worlds of contemporary Latin America and Spain through the works of their most talented authors. A relaxed and inviting atmosphere allows you to have fun while you increase your reading, writing, and speaking skills and explore the nuances and subtleties of the Spanish language and culture. An emphasis on vocabulary development and brief reviews of grammar and mechanics are included. Our purpose is to release the imagination, enrich vocabulary and to develop basic skills for creative writing in addition to the reading and comprehension of outstanding stories.
The work of writers such as Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Horacio Quiroga, Isabel Allende, Pablo Neruda, and Juan Rulfo are included. Different readings and genres are addressed with each course offering. This course is meant to be taken after completing Spanish for Communication VI and at least one Refining Fluency in Spanish course or having the equivalent proficiency level.

Instructor: Toni Lampell

Toni Lampell
Toni Lampell teaches Spanish for Communication courses for the Spanish Language certificate program. She is a native Spanish speaker from Mexico with more than 20 years of experience teaching Spanish in the different countries she has lived in. She has a Master’s degree in education from SUNY Buffalo and a Master’s Degree in Hispanic Studies from the Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala. She is a professional moderator of workshops for different literature topics in El Salvador and Guatemala, and has coordinated Spanish literary clubs in Uruguay, Bolivia, El Salvador and Guatemala.
 
Toni considers herself a passionate advocate of Latin American culture and literature. Through her lessons, she is focused on teaching her students how to appreciate, relate to, and understand the diversity and richness of Hispanic literature. Toni is a firm believer that learning a new language gives us the tools to get to know another culture and better understand the world we live in.

La Instructora Toni Lampell estudió la Licenciatura en Ciencias Políticas y Administración (UIA); Especialidad en Mercadotecnia y Finanzas (UIA), Maestría en Ciencias de la Educación (SUNY Buffalo), y Maestría en Literatura Hispanoamericana (Universidad Francisco Marorquín).

Durante 20 años ha sido académica, enseñando en distintos colegios (K-12) y universidades en las áreas de Educación, Liderazgo, Enseñanza del Español, Cultura Hispanoamericana, Literatura Hispanoamericana, Geografía Internacional, y Técnicas para Hablar en Público. También ha creado y coordinado cursos y clubes de lectura en español para adultos en cuatro diferentes paises.

Tiene certificación como locutora de radio y televisión por la SEP en México y por COMSAL en El Salvador. Ha impartido cursos de Liderazgo y Locución en diversas escuelas de educación superior.

Ha vivido en seis diferentes países latinoamericanos y durante 5 años fue mentora de mujeres emprendedoras en El Salvador, a través de la organización Voces Vitales.

Desde 2021 trabaja con UCSD en el área de Extended Studies y es socia de la American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).
