Students will be introduced to the basic legal principles relating to immigration into the U.S., learning how to analyze immigration options for intending immigrants, and acquiring a working knowledge of the use of immigration forms in an immigration law practice. Topics to be covered include non-immigrant visitor, student and business visa options, immigrant business visa options, family immigration, asylum, criminal aspects of immigration law, and employer sanctions (form I-9 compliance).

Course Format

This is a Live Online Synchronous course, with web-based class lectures scheduled to meet at published dates and times.  UCSD Extended Studies operates in Pacific Standard Time and therefore all class meetings and deadlines are held to Pacific Standard Time (PST).
Attendance is required for all meetings, regardless of the time zone in which you reside.

Teodora D Purcell has extensive experience in all facets of immigration law, including global immigration, consular practice, administrative and federal appeals, and immigration compliance. She counsels clients in a broad array of industries focusing on technology, innovative, life science and biotech sectors on global mobility and business immigration issues. She also represents individuals in various family immigration matters, as well as foreign investors in complex immigration cases. Ms. Purcell has also handled asylum, removal defense, naturalization and other special immigration cases, including immigration appeals and has successfully argued before the U.S. Federal Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court.

Ms. Purcell is a Partner at Larrabee Albi Coker LLP in San Diego and has been a faculty member of the UCSD ABA Approved Paralegal Program since 2013. She is active on several professional and industry local organizations and is frequently invited to speak on immigration law topics. Currently, Ms. Purcell serves on the Board of Women of Color in Law and is a Co-Chair of the Lawyers Club of San Diego, Legal Community Outreach Committee.

For her legal expertise, leadership in the community and pro bono service, Ms. Purcell is recipient of many accolades, among which the Thompson Reuters Super Lawyers Award, Immigration Law (2016-2021), Top 25 Women Lawyers in San Diego, Super Lawyers (2019-2021), the 2016 KPBS Local Hero Award, Women’s History Month; American Immigration Lawyer Association San Diego Chapter 2016 Pro Bono Award; Global Awards 2016 - Winner - Relocation Category; 2015 La Mancha Award, Distinguished Pro Bono Attorney of the Year, Casa Cornelia Law Center 2015, and 2014 Top Attorneys in Immigration Law, San Diego Daily.
