Financial Accounting for Non-Accountants

Gain an overview of how to use accounting and financial data for more effective and profitable decisions. Learn the information necessary to interpret and evaluate the financial effects of day-to-day management decisions. This course emphasizes the interpretation of accounting concepts that underlie basic financial statements without focusing on detailed mechanics.
During this course, students will learn about:
- Differences and uses of financial and managerial accounting, and auditing
- Basic financial statement analysis
- Ways to understand and interpret the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow
- Accounting for planning, budgeting and control in various types of organizations
- Cost-volume-profit relationships
Format: This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate. UCSD Extended Studies operates in Pacific Standard Time and therefore any deadline is considered 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Author of DOLLAR$ AND SENSE: A Workbook on the ABCs of Investments, George has published over 300 security analyst reports on diversified companies and industries. Lifetime member of Strathmore's Who's Who Registry of Business Leaders with over 30 years of experience in the aforementioned areas that includes corporate business experience (1981-1994) in asset management, securities research and investment banking, and as a university instructor (1998-to date) in finance, economics, management and mathematics. George holds an MBA in Finance and BS (Summa Cum Laude) in Quantitative Business Analysis from the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, where he was a graduate assistant in finance & business economics.
