Clear a Single Subject, Multiple Subject,
or Education Specialist Credential
UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies' Induction program is designed to provide a two-year, individualized, job-embedded system of mentoring, support and professional learning that begins in the teacher's first years of teaching. This program reflects standards adopted by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist Induction Programs.
The State of California mandates that all teachers must hold a valid California Teaching Credential, which authorizes them to provide classroom instruction. Credentials are offered on a preliminary basis. Each new teacher must complete the requirements based upon the preliminary to clear a teaching credential within a specified five year time period in order to remain a K-12 teacher within the California Public Education System. A university sponsored Induction Program is one method for preliminary credential holders to clear their teaching credentials (Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist).
A preliminary teaching credential and employment as an instructor in a California K-12 school are required for admission to the program. A completed application must be on file and the student must receive formal admittance to the program before enrolling in any Induction program courses.
All Courses are CCTC Approved.
UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies offers coursework approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to fulfill the requirements of most Clear Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist Teaching Credentials.
The program provides:
- The required Induction courses
- A Planned Course of Study
- Student advisement and clear credential recommendation upon completion
Note: Participants must have an application on file prior to enrolling in these courses. Your Induction Mentor and/or Partner must be approved and assigned prior to beginning coursework in the program.
Demand and Job Prospects
The vast majority of public K-12 schools in California require instructor applicants and employees to hold maintain a valid teaching credential. Since a preliminary teaching credential is not renewable. An Induction program is an option for individuals to obtain a clear teaching credential in order to maintain a valid teaching credential.
Industry Certification
The term "clear" credential signifies that all education and program requirements for the credential have been met. An Induction Program is defined as a program that meets the Induction Program Standards.
This program is aligned with the Clear Credential requirements and standards established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). All required courses are CCTC approved; therefore once admitted candidates complete the program, they will be eligible to earn a Clear - Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist - Teaching Credential from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
All required courses in the program must be completed with a Letter Grade of "C" or higher and an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for a Clear Credential at the end of the Induction Program. Grades of "C-" or below will not count toward program requirements for recommendation purposes.

The Site Based Induction Mentor application is available online. Admissions in on a rolling admission basis so there is no specific application deadline. Each application is reviewed in the order the supporting documentation is received.

Education Specialist: Level I to Preliminary

Requirements have recently changed for the Level I Education Specialist credential in the transition to preliminary Education Specialist credential, candidates may need to take additional coursework before beginning the program.

Early Completion Option (ECO)

To exercise the Early Completion Option (ECO), candidates must hold a preliminary multiple subject, single subject credential, or education specialist credential and be employed in a CA public school. The intent of the standard is to serve experienced and exceptional candidates. Interested candidates will need to demonstrate prior teaching experience as the teacher of record that they have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies required of all teacher candidates who complete the Induction program. Candidates eligible for ECO may complete the Induction program in an abbreviated manner (one year).

Induction Program Guidelines

All candidates who wish to receive a Clear - Single Subject, Multiple Subject, or Education Specialist - Teaching Credential are required to:
- Apply to the Induction program.
- Finalize your admission to the program.
- Induction Mentor and/or Partner must be approved and assigned prior to beginning coursework in the program.
- Complete all the required courses with a grade of "C" or better.
- A grade of "C-" or lower is not equivalent to a grade of "C" or higher.
- Maintain an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher in the program.
- Submit verification that you have successfully completed any additional requirements indicated on your Planned Course of Study, if any.
- Each candidate may or may not have additional requirements indicated.
- Only items marked with and "X" on your Planned Course of Study are required. Coursework must be completed within 5 years of beginning the program.
- Submit a Request to Recommend directly to UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies.

How long does it normally take to process an application?
Applications will be reviewed by a credential analyst. Applicants will be notified of acceptance into the Induction Program by mail within 4 weeks of receipt of a completed application. Once an Induction candidate is admitted to the program, detailed information in order to confirm your admission to the program will be sent to you, including a Planned Course of Study. Mentors and Partners will receive an approval via email.

Formal Recommendation to CCTC

Request to Recommend
Upon completion of the Induction Program, a UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies credentials analyst will submit a formal recommendation to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). Details on the process are covered in the Portfolio class.
Only participants who have finalized their admission to the program and completed the entire Induction program are eligible for formal recommendation. Please review your Planned Course of Study for any additional requirements you may have.
- A completed Credentialing Recommend Request form.
- Official transcript(s) verifying completion of all coursework and requirements on your Planned Course of Study.
- This includes any coursework completed at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies.
- The Commission will only send the Recommendation notification to the email address they have on file. Update your email with the Commission prior to submitting the Request to Recommend. UC San Diego can no longer do so on your behalf.
- Candidates are required to submit a processing fee directly through the Commission’s online recommendation system upon recommendation for their program.
- This fee can be made by credit or debit card only.
- The recommendation email will come from donotreply@ctc.ca.gov
