What You Will Learn

Students will explore a range of tools and resources needed to optimize revenue cycle including how to verify insurance eligibility and determine benefit levels, the different claim forms and the importance of collecting accurate information for submission, how to successfully appeal denied claims, and more. Students will also learn how to effectively communicate to patients and provide exceptional customer service.

Market Demand

Having skill sets in revenue cycle is necessary to work in the revenue collection arena of all healthcare systems. According to Burning Glass, job postings in revenue cycle have increased 168% since 2010, there have been more than 187,777 job postings for revenue cycle nationwide, and more than 2,330 jobs in San Diego County alone. Some of the most requested skills for these positions are customer billing, customer service, scheduling, medical coding, medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT Coding, HIPAA, and electronic health records . Moreover, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services.

This specialized Healthcare Revenue Cycle Certificate, which includes 90 hours of didactic education, would allow students with no prior experience to gain the skills and knowledge necessary for entry level positions in healthcare revenue cycle as well as preparing them for the CRCR exams and CRCS exam.

The Revenue Cycle course changed my career path completely! I was a Director of Revenue for 20 years in Hospitality looking for a change, and I had seen several revenue positions come up within healthcare and I wanted to see how I could make the change and found the Revenue Cycle Course at UCSD. I had no background in healthcare and I was looking for a course that would not only get me started understanding the Revenue Cycle, but also allow for me to get a foot in the door. I took all 3 Revenue Cycle Management courses and passed all 3 courses with an A average. The instructor Laura Handy-Dineen made the class interesting and prepared me for my next role. After completing the course there was a position in the Revenue Integrity department at UCSD that Laura was able to connect me with. I have left hospitality and I currently work with the Professional Billing Revenue Integrity team, correcting claims, processing changes from coders, and special billing and correction projects. I am so happy in my current role and would recommend the Revenue Program to anyone looking for a change or a way to grow in healthcare.

- Bridgette Culbreth,

I had the opportunity and determination to embark on an amazing 9 month certificate program at UC San Diego Extension. The Healthcare Revenue Cycle Certificate Program was one of the best decisions I could have made despite having 13 years of Revenue Cycle Patient Access experience at the time I enrolled. This course provided me a much deeper level of understanding on how all Revenue Cycle Departments interconnect and the value each one has to maximize hospital reimbursement. This Certificate Program has given me the tools to continue my growing and development and pursue other leadership opportunities within Revenue Cycle. I am currently using the skills developed from all 3 courses in my new leadership role at UC San Diego Health. A special thank you to my instructor Laura Handy-Dineen and special guests that provided valuable lessons.
