Gain a basic understanding of the introductory concepts and use of toxicology in drug discovery and development. The basic principles of toxicology will be presented as they relate to the assessment of drug safety from the initial selection of a drug for development through the registration of a drug for human use and post-marketing surveillance. The principles and applications of toxicology will be taught through the use of actual examples encountered in the drug discovery and development process to help you deal with toxicology issues you may encounter in the work environment. Chemists, biologists, clinicians and others who are involved in pharmaceutical research and development would benefit from this course.
Goals and Objectives:
This course will provide an overview and practical applications of the discipline of toxicology to studying and understanding the adverse effects of chemicals on biological systems. The fundamentals taught in this course can be applied to the development of small molecules as well as biologics.

Dahea You, ,PhD
Dr. You is a Senior Principal Scientist at Johnson & Johnson, bringing extensive industry expertise in nonclinical safety assessment and toxicology to the program. Prior to her current role, she served as the Assistant Director of Toxicology at Ionis Pharmaceuticals in Carlsbad, where she led cross-functional teams to design safety strategies for drug candidates, mitigate toxicity liabilities, and support critical regulatory submissions. She also served as a project toxicologist at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, focusing on neuroscience and gastrointestinal therapeutic areas.
Dr. You holds both a Doctor of Pharmacy (2014) and a PhD in Toxicology (2019) from Rutgers University. She further advanced her expertise through a postdoctoral fellowship with the Division of National Toxicology Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), contributing to two federal interagency Tox21 collaborative projects.
An accomplished researcher, Dr. You has published extensively and presented her work at local, national, and international conferences, earning several awards for her contributions to the field. Beyond her research, she is a dedicated mentor to undergraduate and graduate students and a leader within professional organizations such as the Society of Toxicology. She is also a passionate advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) both within her organizations and across professional societies.
