Spanish for Healthcare Professionals I

LASP-40150

This course is appropriate for beginning-level Spanish learners in the medical health profession who wish to increase their effectiveness in communicating with Spanish speaking clients. Topics include how to greet patients, brief conversations, preliminary patient information, checking into the hospital, at the pediatrician office, at the gynecologist office, and other general health subjects. The first five chapters of the book are covered and include: medical terminology, grammar lessons that include gender and numbers, articles, subject pronouns, present indicative of the verbs ser and estar, present indicative of regular -ar, -er and -ir verbs, adjectives, and more. This course is of interest to a wide range of health professionals such as nurses, physicians, psychologists, counselors, and administrative staff.

Ana Colston
Ana Colston is a native of Spain, where she earned a BA in English from the University of Alcalá de Henares. She came to the US in 2001 and received her Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of California in Santa Barbara. Ana has been teaching Spanish at Francis Parker School for 15 years and has recently completed the Translation and Interpretation Certificate program at UCSD Extension.
Ana enjoys reading, hiking, working out, baking, and spending time with her husband, two children, six dogs and five cats. Her favorite places in the world are Prague and Barcelona and in the near future she hopes to travel to Costa Rica and Iceland.

Kevin Mikolich earned his M.A. in Spanish from California State University San Marcos and a B.A. in Sociology from the University of San Diego. He has a clear single subject teaching credential in the state of California and has also published research on el voseo titled, "La acomodación lingüística por hablantes del español centroamericano en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos." Kevin was also a contributor and reviewer of Alianzas (2nd Edition), an intermediate, university-level Spanish textbook. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia, South America, and has extensive teaching experience at both the university and K-12 levels.

Instructor: Michael Woods

Michael Woods

Michael Woods teaches in both the Spanish for Healthcare Professionals and the Translation & Interpretation Certificate programs. Michael is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (CCHI) and also completed a Professional Certificate in Translation & Interpretation. He holds a Master of Arts in Contemporary Hispanic/Latino Studies and completed doctoral coursework in Spanish sociolinguistics with a focus on Central American voseo in the US. He has taught college-level courses for more than 15 years and has worked as a healthcare interpreter since 2017. Prior to teaching, interpreting, and translating, he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, which laid the groundwork for his career in language instruction and language access.
