Infant and Toddler Development

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the growth and development of infants and toddlers from birth through age three. Content includes an in-depth study of the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional milestones that define this period. The course also examines and emphasizes the role of family and relationships focusing on how high-quality care is the foundation for a healthy development of basic milestones and the complex interplay between biology, environment, and responsive caregiving.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify key milestones of developmental domains recognizing the typical sequences of motor, language, social development, and approaches to learning during infancy and toddlerhood.
- Analyze and apply foundational theories (Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson) to real-world infant behavior, through observations, content of videos, articles, and course textbooks.
- Analyze the impact of primary caregiving and continuity of care by evaluating, assessing, and designing safe, stimulating, and culturally responsive environments for the care of infants and toddlers.
- Apply observation and documentation techniques to create individualized best practice care for infants and toddlers by writing essays that apply and reflect principles of interacting with infants and toddlers through the research of case studies.
