Human Physiology

BIOL-X403.40

Learn Human Physiology Online

Gain a basic understanding of how the human body works. This course is designed to cover the fundamental concepts of human physiology. A general overview of most of the systems of the human body will be presented along with a discussion about regulation and the medical relevance of the physiological concepts. Although the course is geared toward students who have limited science and math backgrounds, the textbook provides enough detail to satisfy those students who want to enter the health professions. Topics include the following systems: nervous, endocrine, muscular, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry and cell biology is required to be successful in this course.

Format

This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate.

Transferring for College Credit

Many courses at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies may be eligible for college credit at UC San Diego or other institutions. Credit transfer is determined by the receiving institution. We recommend consulting with the registrar's office at your intended institution before enrolling to confirm how your courses will transfer.

Students interested in this course with a lab component, please enroll in BIOL40368 - Human Physiology with Lab

Christina Lewis, PhD

Christina Lewis is a physiologist and an anatomist with more than 20 years of experience teaching in the University setting. She earned a PhD in Physiology from Colorado State University, did graduate research at National Jewish Health respiratory hospital in Denver, CO and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco in the Lung Biology Center.

Her research has utilized both human studies and animal models to investigate asthma pathogenesis including the role of genetics and genomics in airway disease. Dr. Lewis is passionate about science and the human body and loves sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge with students. She has taught to a variety of academic cohorts, including professional programs (medical, dental, podiatric medicine), allied health (nurse anesthesia, occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant), and undergraduates.

Her teaching expertise includes anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and genetics/ genomics/ cell biology. Her strengths as an educator include her passion, knowledge and curiosity of the human body, the desire to teach, interests in creative delivery of course content, and her commitment to innovative and inclusive approaches in education and course design.
