NEW Course - Fundamentals of 5G NR

5G technology has delivered higher data rate and lower latency, enabling a wide range of novel applications including extended reality (XR), extremely low-power devices, satellites, and many more. In this online course, you will learn the fundamentals of 5G NR (New Radio) – the radio access network of 5G. The materials will be based on the 5G and 5G Advanced standards (3GPP Technical Specifications Releases 15 through 18) with insights drawn from the instructor’s first-hand experience in contributing to the 5G standards. Simple examples and exercises will be provided to help the students grasp the key concepts. Various topics will be taught with a holistic view by ways such as analyzing the call flows and comparing various techniques. Hands-on projects will be available to those students who want to have an in-depth understanding of certain topics.

Course Highlights:

  • 5G use cases and 3GPP standards
  • Waveforms and numerology: OFDM, DFT-spread-OFDM
  • Initial access: cell selection, cell reselection, 4-step RACH, 2-step RACH
  • Channel coding (LDPC and polar code)
  • Massive MIMO: precoding, CSI feedback
  • Beamforming: hybrid beamforming, beam management of mmWave
  • Data channel, control channel
  • Above the PHY: MAC, RLC, and PDCP
  • NB-IoT and Non-terrestrial Network (NTN)
  • RedCap, UE power saving, Extended Reality (XR), Network Energy Saving (NES)
  • Interactive weekly online sessions for Q&A in addition to online classes

Course Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply key techniques of 5G NR (New Radio) to support a wide array of 5G device types (handset, CPE), services (eMBB, URLLC, satellite), spectrum and deployments
  • Explain the call flows and the connections among different techniques
  • Understand the rationales behind various 5G techniques

Course Typically Offered: Online in Winter and Summer quarters.

Instructor: Liangping Ma, Ph.D.

Liangping Ma, Ph.D.
Liangping Ma is an engineer with Qualcomm, where he is involved in R&D and standardization related to 5G and 6G, including real-time communication and non-terrestrial networks (NTN). He has been teaching 5G technologies at UC San Diego Extended Studies since 2019.

He was with InterDigital (2009–2019), where he contributed to 3GPP and Wi-Fi standards and video transmission technology. Prior to that, he worked at San Diego Research Center Inc. and Argon ST (acquired by Boeing), leading protocol design and the development of a modem for wireless sensor networks.

Liangping holds over 1,000 granted and pending patents worldwide and has authored/co-authored more than 50 journal and conference papers. He received his B.S. in Physics from Wuhan University, China, in 1998 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware in 2004.
