Intellectual property rights are essential to the survival of life science companies. This course presents critical information to create and maintain the proprietary position required for commercialization and life cycle management. It provides an overview of key IP law issues, including distinct nuances for the life science industry. Class participants will study criteria for identifying and patenting their technologies, issues associated with patent enforcement and litigation, as well as patent issues associated with due diligence, freedom to operate, and investment. This course also provides a basic understanding of various kinds of agreements that involve intellectual property. The course is designed for life science executive, scientists and researchers, scientific directors, business development and tech transfer managers, investors and industry analysts seeking to acquire a basic understanding of these topics and the ability to identify key issues.

Instructor: Donna Perdue

Donna Perdue
Donna O. Perdue, Ph.D. J.D., is the founder of Perdue IP Law, APC, a virtual law firm focusing on intellectual property (IP) law for the life sciences.  Her practice focuses on helping clients develop IP strategies to identify, protect, manage, and leverage intellectual assets.  Aspects of her practice include: patent drafting and prosecution; worldwide patent portfolio management; analysis of  validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate (FTO); IP audits; due diligence review; and consulting on IP management, IP policy, data protection, genetic resources management, and international agreements relating to IP and genetic resources.  Clients include start-ups, established companies, universities, research institutes, investment funds, non-governmental organizations, and intergovernmental organizations.  She served as lead subject matter expert for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) project on the Use of Information in the Public Domain for Economic Development, to develop strategies for using patent information to evaluate freedom to operate and public domain in ways that can support entrepreneurs in developing countries.
Dr. Perdue received a Ph.D. in plant physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology from Cornell University, with research focused on plant signal transduction systems, and a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law.  
Dr. Perdue is admitted to practice law in California and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
