Introduction to Mosaic Art

Create mosaic art by employing different methods and working with a variety of materials in this introductory course. Explore methods for creating realistic representations of three-dimensional (3D) forms such as: portraits, animals or landscape. Learn the contemporary European folk art technique called Pique Assiette (“Broken China Mosaics”) combinations of broken china, ceramic dishes, stained glass, vitreous glass, ceramic tile and found objects such as rocks, shells and mirrors. Learn and apply the indirect method used for completing mosaics panels or mosaics off site. You will complete a total of four projects.
What You Will Learn:
- How to create a flat surface piece using the Broken China or Found-object Mosaic method.
- How to create a curved or multi-surface piece using the Broken china/found-object Mosaic method.
- How to make a flat surface piece using the Transfer Method.
- How to create a 2D mosaic piece which depicts realistic or representational forms.

Course Fee: $325
Prerequisite: none
Materials: Bring sketch pad and pencils to first class. Material cost: approx. $50-$100 depending on variety and quantity of materials students purchase.
Note: No prior mosaic experience necessary. Elective course for Art and the Creative Process professional certificate.

Cathy Sparks teaches Introduction to Mosaic Art and Introduction to Mosaic Sculpture for the Art & the Creative Process certificate program. Cathy has been an artist all her life and has a well-rounded background in most visual art forms. She has taught art to students of all ages including developmentally disabled adults at St. Madeline Sophie's Center. She is a member of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association and the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
