NEW Course - Fundamentals of 5G NR
5G technology has delivered higher data rate and lower latency, enabling a wide range of novel applications including extended reality (XR), extremely low-power devices, satellites, and many more. In this online course, you will learn the fundamentals of 5G NR (New Radio) – the radio access network of 5G. The materials will be based on the 5G and 5G Advanced standards (3GPP Technical Specifications Releases 15 through 18) with insights drawn from the instructor’s first-hand experience in contributing to the 5G standards. Simple examples and exercises will be provided to help the students grasp the key concepts. Various topics will be taught with a holistic view by ways such as analyzing the call flows and comparing various techniques. Hands-on projects will be available to those students who want to have an in-depth understanding of certain topics.
Course Highlights:
- 5G use cases and 3GPP standards
- Waveforms and numerology: OFDM, DFT-spread-OFDM
- Initial access: cell selection, cell reselection, 4-step RACH, 2-step RACH
- Channel coding (LDPC and polar code)
- Massive MIMO: precoding, CSI feedback
- Beamforming: hybrid beamforming, beam management of mmWave
- Data channel, control channel
- Above the PHY: MAC, RLC, and PDCP
- NB-IoT and Non-terrestrial Network (NTN)
- RedCap, UE power saving, Extended Reality (XR), Network Energy Saving (NES)
- Interactive weekly online sessions for Q&A in addition to online classes
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Apply key techniques of 5G NR (New Radio) to support a wide array of 5G device types (handset, CPE), services (eMBB, URLLC, satellite), spectrum and deployments
- Explain the call flows and the connections among different techniques
- Understand the rationales behind various 5G techniques
