About the HVAC Systems Design and Control Program
This program provides a focused, concentrated study of theory, governing codes, calculation, and practical applications of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Recommended for the professional advancement of HVAC designers and engineers, recent graduate engineers, facility engineers, or for anyone involved with HVAC systems, the courses emphasize merit of energy analysis and methods of savings for performance contracting. Classes focus on various HVAC systems and components, their advantages and disadvantages, and their relative energy consumptions.
Note: HVAC Courses may be taken in any order. If you do not have any HVAC experience, it is recommended that you take HVAC DDC Basics first.

Instructor Highlights
Frank Shadpour is a Registered Mechanical Professional Engineer with over 30 years of extensive experience in energy efficiency and sustainable mechanical design. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC) and has a Master’s degree from the University of Redlands, California. Mr. Shadpour is also an ACG Certified Commissioning Authority; an USGBC LEED Accredited Professional; an ASPE Certified Plumbing Designer; a CSI Certified Construction Specifier; and an ASHRAE Healthcare Facility Design Professional.
An active member in both the professional and academic communities, Mr. Shadpour is an ASHRAE Fellow and a past President of the ASHRAE San Diego Chapter. He currently serves as the Program Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee, TC1.4, “Control Theory and Application”. He has also served as an Instructor of “HVAC Design & Control” courses at the University of California, San Diego since 1987.
Beginning his career as a HVAC technician at an early age, Mr. Shadpour has a great deal of experience in the start-up, troubleshooting, and servicing of HVAC and control systems. He currently serves as the President of SC Engineers, a leading engineering and planning firm in Southern California, providing environmentally responsive and technologically advanced solutions for a variety of facility types. For more information on class formats you can click on each course in the matrix above. Classes in the matrix depict quarter and format (online or in-class) courses are offered.
Via concurrent enrollment, students accepted into this program will take the 2 courses alongside Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) degree in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (MBC) students. The program will be completed over the established 9-week summer period (June 26-August 28, 2026), by taking the two required classes SIO-295S and SIO-295LS.

You will have to pay the one time $50 fee in order to submit your application. Once submitted, your application cannot be changed. You can track the progress of your application at MyExtension.

If you have taken a course from an accredited university covering the learning objectives of a required or elective course, you may be able to transfer a total of one class per certificate to UC San Diego Extended Studies. You may send your request along with details about how the class at your accredited university is equivalent to our Extended Studies course. Attach an electronic transcript and send your email to unexengr@ucsd.edu.
If you have not taken a course elsewhere, but already have the skills covered in a course, you may be able to substitute an alternate Extended Studies course in its place. Send your request to substitute one of the program courses to unexengr@ucsd.edu. In your request, indicate which course you would like to take and which course it would substitute. Include how a substitution may better meet your professional or employment needs. The class should align with the overall student learning outcomes of this certificate. As previously mentioned only one waiver total can be granted per certificate. Requests for these considerations require departmental approval.
