Friday at the Movies

Osher is pleased to screen movies on selected Friday mornings during the spring quarter. The movies will be screened in Classroom 350 and will be on campus only. Films selected will vary from foreign language films introduced by Osher favorite Andy Friedenberg, Founder of the San Diego Cinema Society, to others selected by our Osher colleagues.

April 3: Number 24
Number 24, is a 2024 Norwegian biographical feature film about the Norwegian resistance fighter Gunnar Sønsteby. The film follows Sønsteby from the campaign in 1940 on the brink of war and throughout World War II. It dramatizes several of the Oslo Group’s sabotage operations and assassinations during World War II, and is framed by an elderly Sønsteby giving a lecture to school students in Rjukan, where he recounts the events he participated in during the war. In Norwegian dubbed English.

April 24: Children of Heaven 

An Oscar-nominated film: When young Ali (Amir Farrokh Hashemian) accidentally loses the only pair of shoes his little sister Zahra (Bahare Seddiqi) owns, the siblings attempt to hide the bad news from their poverty-stricken father (Mohammad Amir Naji) and ill mother (Fereshte Sarabandi). They devise a scheme to share Ali's own pair of worn sneakers until they can find a new pair of shoes for Zahra. This documentary-like film was shot on location in some of Tehran's poorest areas. In Farsi with English subtitles.

May 15: Red Like The Sky
A nearly sightless boy is sent to a school for blind children, where he secretly discovers the possibilities of the recorded sound. In Italian with English subtitles.
