The Losing War on Drugs
Speaker
Michael Pancer, J.D.
Coordinator
Michael Lipman
In the early 20th century Congress passed legislation
making it illegal to possess and distribute certain
drugs in the U.S. In 1971 Nixon declared a “war
on drugs”. Reagan focused on interdiction and
aggressive prosecution. While Nancy said “Just Say
No”, the government continued to focus on stopping
the supply rather than trying to deal with the
demand for drugs. The focus on stopping the flow of
drugs like Fentanyl continues unabated. Hear from a
long-time criminal defense attorney what the impact
of the war on drugs has been and how we might go
forward more productively.
