A Deep Dive Into Our Oceans: What We Can Learn From the Seafloor and Below

This talk will cover various oceanographic topics through the lens of the deep sea, where it is dark, cold and under immense pressure. We will learn about what materials from the seafloor and below, as we move closer to the Earth's mantle, can tell us about the history of our oceans and Earth. Topics such as changing climates, mass extinctions, ecosystem shifts, and how humans have been affected by - and affect - our oceans will be covered. Some representative samples from the Geological Collections at Scripps Institution of Oceanography will be on display for in-person show and tell. You will also learn more about the different types of research that are conducted at Scripps institution of Oceanography.
 


Speaker Bio

Presenter: Alex Hangsterfer is the collections manager at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Her work supports muiti-disciplinary research projects conducted by researchers at academic and governmental institutions across the world. She worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution before coming to Scripps, where she received her MS when she was hired to manage the Geological Collections.
