Winter Curriculum Highlights

We are proud to offer another rich and varied program this winter. Master Class I on Wednesday mornings welcomes the return of Professor Robert Cancel, lecturing on “Popular Music of the 1960s in a Cultural Context. “ Master Class II, “Ethics in Science and Technology” features six distinguished academics, who will examine the social implications of technical progress and the use of massive amounts of personal data in medicine, war, surveillance, the environment, and decision-making.

A number of multi-lecture series are scheduled: Osher’s own Allan Kleinman, a Massachusetts snowbird,
presents a reprise of his Brandeis University Osher class on the Human Endocrine System. Four members of the UC San Diego Economics Department will lecture on Contemporary Economic Issues of Public Interest. Art historian Cornelia Feye returns for a series on Surrealism and Its Precursors.

Our regular lecture series in Law and Society, International Relations, Medicine, Science, Humanities, and the Social Sciences feature a wide range of preeminent speakers. Notable this quarter are former US Attorney and commentator, Harry Litman, on The Rule of Law in the Age of Trump; retired Vice Admiral Robert Thomas dis-cussing the US and Republic of Korea Alliance; Professor Peter Schultz, president of The Scripps Research Institute on a New Model for Nonprofit Medical Research; retired Metropolitan Opera violinist Erica Miner on Leonard Bernstein; and historian Richard Crawford on San Diego and the Spanish Flu 1918-1919.

Our small-classroom seminars will again entertain and stimulate their loyal participants, and we will hear from some of our accomplished colleagues as Osher Presenters. Three exciting field trips, Theater World performances, and a variety of social events will help build our Osher community and enhance our academic program.
