Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

President's Message Spring 2021

From Osher President Carol Roberts

As winter becomes a memory, we are all looking forward to changes from many places. The weather should be bringing spring flowers and fresh grass, we all should have had our Covid-19 vaccines by now, and hopefully we will have returned to some of the things we used to enjoy. Our volunteer Curriculum Committee is again bringing us fantastic classes, still only on Zoom, but special indeed. You can see all the wonderful offerings in Steve Clarey’s Look Ahead that follows.

In March and April of every year, elections at Osher take place. As shown in the winter catalog, three offices of the Executive Committee and five Council seats will be open this year. Now is your chance to select the leaders who will guide our very successful program through the next few years. From my point of view, it is a terrific job, allowing me to get to know many more people, to interact with energetic volunteers who are the lifeblood of our organization, and to contribute to the vitality of the community. You can get this wonderful feeling by running for a place on Council or the Executive Committee and secure a successful future for us all at Osher. Please volunteer to run for one of the open offices and be sure to vote in the election.

Although we are doing everything virtually, I want to remind you of the times we still get together for some fun. Theatre World is presenting plays to entertain us, as is the Poetry Cafe. Did you know that Osher member Janice Alper’s poem was published in the San Diego Union Tribune? It is reprinted later in this newsletter. Our virtual Happy Hours have brought us into members’ homes and featured wonderful discussions of personal art collections. And you thought you were the only person to collect frogs! And virtual Live Music performances continue to delight us all. So come have some fun with us!

I look forward to another fascinating semester with you all and encourage you to show us your smiling faces when you join us on Zoom. Connecting with each other is important to everyone!
