Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

A Look Ahead to Fall 2022

By Steve Clarey, Chair of the Curriculum Committee

We hope you have enjoyed the summer quarter of on-campus lectures and iPhone workshops, all of which were also live-streamed via Zoom. Please plan to renew your annual Osher membership and join us for another exciting fall quarter on-campus and via Zoom. Tell your friends and family about our marvelous program.

Fall Master Class I features the biennial series from UCSD CARTA, the Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny, offering a variety of lectures related to human origins research. Master Class II welcomes Professor Robert Cancel back to Osher to revisit the music of the 60s, its impact on society, and how the business of music evolved with the introduction of FM radio and MTV.

Always popular UC Riverside Musicology Professor Walter Clark returns to Osher for a series exploring the Music and Culture of the Great East: the Middle East, India, China, Japan, and Indonesia. Our Art History series in the fall will be the study of the Dutch Modernist Piet Mondrian, presented by Art Historian Victoria Martino. From the Bay Area, award winning musical conductor and director Michael Möschler will discuss well-known music film composer and director collaborations , Additional multi-lecture series will be on Memory and another on Archeology.

Our lectures in Humanities, International Relations, Law and Society, and the Social Sciences feature a wide range. Notable this quarter are: the history of the Jesuits, Europe’s first global company; a discussion of modern Turkey; and Iran; the return of a Marcos to the Philippine Presidency; California’s Mental Health and Homelessness Crisis; and Prisoner Education, a Transformative Experience or Waste of Taxpayer Money? Professor of Law Glenn Smith returns for his annual preview of key cases before the Supreme Court in its 2022-2023 term.

In Medicine and Science, a panel of UCSD physicians will discuss Interventional Radiology, Cutting Edge Therapies Without the Cutting; the Power of the Downstate, the latest in the diagnosis and treatment of migraines; an update on Neurodegenerative Disease Research at UCSD; the successes of the San Diego Zoo Biobanking; and Ocean Optimism, Conservation Success at Sea.

Our literature, WWII history, Memoirs, and French conversation seminars will continue to stimulate their loyal participants, and we will again be entertained on-campus by our Osher Presenter colleagues, our dedicated Theater World performers and directors, Live Music Fridays, and a quarterly Poetry Café. Feel free to share your views with your colleagues on current events in our weekly moderated discussions in Inside Politics and Hot Topics.

The above is just a sample of the marvelous fall program assembled by your volunteer Curriculum Committee. Full descriptions of the curriculum and online events can be found throughout the fall catalog.
