Note: There is a non-refundable $200 - $275 placement fee, depending on the homestay company. All fees must be paid directly to the homestay agency (not UC San Diego). If you would like to transfers from or to the San Diego International Airport, please inquire with the homestay company when you book your accommodation. The fee for airport pick-up is $60 - $85, and the airport drop-off fee is $65 - $75 (San Diego airport only). If you break a current contract with a homestay agency, you will have to pay a $250 penalty.
Benefits
- Some homestay companies offer airport pick-up and drop-off services (San Diego airport only). The companies that offer this additional service charge $60-$85 for airport pick-up and $60-$65 for airport drop-off.
- You can see how Americans really live, and you will have plenty of opportunities to practice English.
- You may rent a room that includes two meals a day (breakfast and dinner), or you may rent a room with no meals included.
- Clean sheets and towels are provided for you.
- Some homestays provide laundry facilities, either coin-operated or for free, depending on the type of homestay (house, building, etc.).
Things to Consider
- You must live within the rules and lifestyle set by your host or host family.
- COVID-19 guidelines inside the homestay (wear a face mask, respect social distancing, testing) may depend on the hosts' wishes.
- The average commute by bus is 45 minutes (maximum 60 minutes door-to-door).
- Internet access is available, but you will need to use your own computer.
- If you rent a room that does not include meals, you can prepare small meals and clean the kitchen when you are finished.
- If the homestay does not provide a laundry facility, the host will indicate the nearest laundromat.
Housing Check-in
You may request early/late check-in, which may require additional payment for the extra nights. All fees are paid directly to the homestay agency, not to UC San Diego.
