Specifically geared towards post-baccalaureate students applying to MD or DO programs, the Post-Baccalaureate Medical Research and Clinical Experience Certificate significantly boosts the qualifications of future medical school candidates by providing a structured route to acquire practical clinical and research experience. This program equips participants with vital skills and knowledge, enhancing their competitiveness in the admissions landscape and ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenging requirements of medical school.

Our Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program is designed to help students strengthen their academic record through upper-division Biological Sciences coursework while preparing for the MCAT and developing a competitive medical school application with guidance from a UC San Diego faculty advisor.

How to Submit an Application?

To be considered for the UC San Diego Post Baccalaureate Medical Research and Clinical Experience Program, a student must successfully complete a 3-step process.


The application cycle opens on January 2nd 2026 and ends May 20th 2026 at 8:59pm PST.

The UC San Diego Post Bac Medical Research and Clinical Experience Program does not have a rolling admission policy.
Submitting your application early in no way improves your chances of gaining admission.

Step 1: Application

All applications must be submitted via PostBacCAS, a centralized application service which allows applicants to research programs and then use one online application to apply to all programs of interest.

In order to be considered for admission to the UC San Diego Post Baccalaureate Medical Research and Clinical Experience Program, the following is required:

  • Must meet the application and GPA requirements. View Requirements.
  • Complete the PostBacCAS application as well as the UC San Diego supplemental questions
  • Create a UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies account
  • Submit three letters of recommendation via PostBacCAS. Your letters may come a variety of sources, including professors, faculty, employers, supervisors, advisors, or volunteer coordinators. Please have your letter writers upload their confidential letters through PostBacCAS.
  • Have official transcripts from all undergraduate colleges and universities submitted directly to PostBacCAS:

  • The PostBacCAS transcript verification process takes up to 4 weeks during peak periods, so please plan accordingly. 

Step 2: Interview

Interviews are by invitation only. Applicants will be informed whether they are invited for an interview by late June with interviews taking place primarily in July. A virtual interview will be required.

Those not invited to interview should understand that the application process is exceptionally competitive, and students are encouraged to re-apply for the program next year.


Step 3: Admission

Applicants will be notified whether they are accepted to the program in August. Accepted students are asked to provide a $500 non-refundable deposit to hold their place in the program. This deposit counts toward the tuition for the program.

The Admissions Committee for the UC San Diego Post Baccalaureate Medical Research and Clinical Experience Program includes faculty from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology as well as Academic Directors from UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies.

The program is completed over nine months and consists of 48 total units, including 24 units of laboratory research in medical and translational science and 24 units of hands-on clinical experience in anesthesiology specialties.

No. This program does not replace required medical school prerequisite coursework. Instead, it is designed to enhance applicants’ profiles by providing advanced clinical exposure, research experience, and mentorship.
