In the Business of Copyediting course, students will be prepared to launch their own copyediting or proofreading business or grow an existing one. In today's economy, creating a career with flexibility and mobility appeals to many people. The course will focus on how to acquire work, grow your business, legal and tax structures, financial basics, and day-to-day management. Included are resources for networking though copyediting organizations.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will have the following:

  • A plan to launch and maintain an editing business.
  • A plan for finding and approaching clients in a preferred niche or subject area.
  • Working knowledge of financial and legal issues such as business structures, income taxes, expenses, recordkeeping, and business liability insurance.
  • Working knowledge of editorial rates, contracts, invoicing, and work logs.
  • A set of resources and tools to help in their editing business.

Robin Kelley
Robin Kelley earned her B.A. in English Education from Montana State University (MSU). After graduation, Robin followed her wanderlust and traveled extensively before returning to Montana. Her enthusiasm for education and language led her to a position as the managing editor for a continuing education company. She has also pursued her career in community involvement and education through a variety of positions, including teaching communications at MSU and Gallatin College as well as working as a writing coach in the college of business at MSU. Robin completed the Copyediting Certificate Program through UC San Diego Extension and is thrilled to teach with the team at UC San Diego. As the owner of her own freelance editing business, which focuses on editing, writing, and developing educational and business materials, Robin enjoys empowering authors to strengthen their voices through their writing. She teaches Business of Copyediting and Copyediting I for Copyediting Program.

Christine Steele
Christine Steele is an editor/writer with more than 25 years of experience, 12 of them in financial services. She’s launched 100+-page corporate style guides and edited books on historical fiction, retirement, and sculptor art. She has also freelanced as Steele Editing & Writing.

She is a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, San Diego Professional Editors Network (SD/PEN), and is a lifetime member and past board member of ACES: The Society for Editing. She has a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, a combined certificate in Print/Broadcast Journalism from UCLA Extension, a certificate in Teaching Online from UC San Diego Extended Studies, and a certificate in Critical Thinking from Cornell University.

Christine is known for sharing her passion for words and loves the ampersand. She encourages others to have fun with copyediting and often receives photos of typos to add to her gallery of errors.

She is a co-lead instructor for the Copyediting Certificate Program and teaches Copyediting I, Copyediting II, and The Business of Copyediting.
