Human Physiology with Lab

BIOL-40368

Complete Human Physiology With Lab Online

Gain a basic understanding of how the human body works. This course is designed to cover the fundamental concepts of human physiology. A general overview of most of the systems of the human body will be presented along with a discussion about regulation and the medical relevance of the physiological concepts. Although the course is geared toward students who have limited science and math backgrounds, the textbook provides enough detail to satisfy those students who want to enter the health professions. Topics include the following systems: nervous, endocrine, muscular, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive.

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of chemistry and cell biology is required to be successful in this course.

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the functional roles of the organs that constitute each of the body systems
  • Identify the structural‐functional relationships of various cells, organs and systems within the human body
  • Explain the foundational concepts that guide the functioning and regulation of the major organ systems
  • Discuss the relationships between the different body systems
  • Describe common pathologies that affect different organ systems
  • Apply knowledge to interpret and analyze case studies
  • Synthesize and integrate knowledge to explain the molecular basis of diseases

Format

This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate.

Transferring for College Credit

Many courses at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies may be eligible for college credit at UC San Diego or other institutions. Credit transfer is determined by the receiving institution. We recommend consulting with the registrar's office at your intended institution before enrolling to confirm how your courses will transfer.

About the Lab Component

This course includes a hands on laboratory involving multi-day experiments that the student performs at home. Except for a few household items, all materials are included in the kit. Please note, there will be some lab assignments that will involve a fetal pig dissection.

The Lab Kit is not included in your course registration; there is an additional fee associated with kit, which must be purchased through HOL Sciences. To order the kit for your course, please use the link provided in the section notes below; be aware that each section has a unique link

*Processing time may take three weeks so we recommend you order the lab kit as soon as possible.

Students interested in this course without the lab component, please enroll in BIOL 40340 - Human Physiology.

Instructor: Aaron Slusher

Aaron Slusher

Aaron Slusher is an exercise physiologist with over a decade of experience investigating the impact of physical and mental stress on the mechanisms associated with immune cell aging (telomere maintenance mechanisms) and cardiometabolic health. Since graduating with his Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University, he completed a molecular and cellular biology postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Michigan and applied his physiology training as an associate research scientist at the Yale School of Medicine examining insulin-mediated intracellular signaling pathways in adipose tissue.

Throughout his career, Dr. Slusher has fostered meaningful collaborations across the United States and internationally and gained extensive knowledge into the successful design and implementation of numerous human, rodent, and in vitro cellular studies. His research has resulted in nearly 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters, over 30 conference presentations, and the development of effective lifestyle interventions and identification of molecular targets that help to increase the healthspan of an aging population.
