Human Physiology
BIOL-40340
Learn Human Physiology Online
Gain a basic understanding of how the human body works. This course is designed to cover the fundamental concepts of human physiology. A general overview of most of the systems of the human body will be presented along with a discussion about regulation and the medical relevance of the physiological concepts. Although the course is geared toward students who have limited science and math backgrounds, the textbook provides enough detail to satisfy those students who want to enter the health professions. Topics include the following systems: nervous, endocrine, muscular, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of chemistry and cell biology is required to be successful in this course.
Format
This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate.
Transferring for College Credit
Many courses at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies may be eligible for college credit at UC San Diego or other institutions. Credit transfer is determined by the receiving institution. We recommend consulting with the registrar's office at your intended institution before enrolling to confirm how your courses will transfer.

Instructor: Nidhi Ahuja
Nidhi Ahuja, Ph.D., has a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, a Master's degree in Biotechnology and a Doctorate degree in Biotechnology. Her research interests lie at the interface of invading pathogenic bacteria and the susceptible human hosts. After completing her postdoctoral research at University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Ahuja dedicated herself to sharing what she had learned with others. Since 2008, she has been teaching various disciplines of biology—both in the classroom and online. She has taught Human Physiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Biochemistry and Medical Microbiology courses. She encourages her students to break the traditional disciplinary boundaries and make interdisciplinary connections in order to appreciate the beauty of learning.

Instructor: John Tat
John Tat is a translational scientist with diverse background in cancer biology, radiobiology, toxicology, drug development, STEM education, and public health. He holds a double baccalaureate in physiology/neuroscience and history from UCSD and a Ph.D. in molecular medicine from TSRI.
Professionally, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pharmacology and toxicology at the UCSD School of Medicine and conducted health education research at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. He has also worked in the biopharmaceutical industry as a cancer pharmacologist.
Teaching is one of the most fulfilling aspects of his professional life, and he has served as an instructor-of-record at SDSU, TSRI, and UCSD. He has taught at all education levels, from undergraduates, to doctoral trainees, to non-traditional students. He designs his courses using evidence-based methods to meet the 2011 AAAS Vision and Change’s challenge to teach science the way science is practiced. He hopes to use his extensive experience in academia and the biopharmaceutical industry to prepare students professionally for the dynamic fields of biological and biomedical sciences.
