Learn How to Design and Execute a Research Project and Present Your Findings Effectively Using GIS
In this hands-on GIS capstone course, you will complete an individual guided research project and report, applying the knowledge and skills you learned in the four prerequisite GIS courses. You will begin the course by proposing a project, then you will complete the project according to your proposed research design, and finally you will present your resulting analysis. Throughout the course, you will also learn basic project management techniques.
Topics include:
- Creating a project outline, including objectives and process flow diagram
- Using ArcGIS Pro to interpret and draw conclusions from spatial data
- Presenting project results with visualizations of key conclusions
Practical experience:
- Comprehensive GIS project, including proposal, outline, and presentation
Course typically offered: Online in Fall and Spring
Enrollment will be closed three weekdays before course start date.
Software: Students will use ArcGIS software developed by ESRI. The software license is included in the course price.
Prerequisites: Completion of GIS I: Introduction to GIS, GIS II: Spatial Analysis, GIS III: Web GIS, and GIS IV: 3-D Display and Analysis of Spatial Data is required.

Sr. GIS Analyst, San Diego County
Jason Batchelor holds a master's in geography with a focus on distributed hydrologic models from San Diego State University, a bachelor's in biology and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professional certification. He is currently the senior GIS analyst of San Diego County, for which he focuses on wildfire planning and oversees six GIS analysts and over 100 planners. Mr. Batchelor also presently chairs the SanGIS Technical Advisory Board.
