Getting Published: Navigating the Children's Book Market

Course Overview

 

This final, required course in the Children's Book Illustration Certificate and Children's Book Writing Certificate programs will guide you through the process of getting published, covering topics such as:

  • Traditional & independent publishing options.
  • Writing queries.
  • How to choose professional representation (or self-management).
  • Navigating contracts.
  • Self-marketing techniques.
  • Managing an effective online presence.

Throughout the course, you will also work on completing a portfolio of your work or a book dummy/proposal.

Being the final course in both certificate programs, this course is only open to students who have completed all other certificate course requirements.

Portfolio & Enrollment Information

 

Pre-approval is required before enrolling by submitting a portfolio to the Arts & Humanities Department during the quarter prior to the course start date.

Instructions are provided in the 'PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION GUIDELINES' link belowPortfolios are reviewed to assess students' work.  Eligible students will be notified and given enrollment instructions for this closed course via email.

PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  Portfolios for Winter 2026 Quarter will be accepted starting in the Fall 2025 Quarter. Due date: TBD.

Portfolio Submission Guidelines


Quarter Offered:  Winter Quarter (course dates are posted in October each year)
Prerequisite:  Successful completion of ALL other Required and Elective course requirements in the Children's Book Illustration or Children's Book Writing certificate program.
Note:  Only students who have submitted a portfolio by the deadline are able to enroll. Registration will be denied if a portfolio was not received.
