General Science: Understanding Nature Through Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science

SCI-40000

Unlock the secrets of the natural world through science

Explore how scientific thinking helps us understand motion, energy, atoms, ecosystems, and climate, all without requiring advanced math. This interdisciplinary course introduces the core principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science—designed for non-science majors, returning students, and lifelong learners.

What You’ll Learn

• โš™๏ธPhysics: Motion, forces, energy, heat, and thermodynamics
•๐ŸงชChemistry: Atomic structure, chemical reactions, periodic table
•๐ŸงฌBiology: Evolution, genetics, ecosystems, cellular organization
•๐ŸŒEarth Science: Geology, weather, climate, and Earth’s place in space

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

•    Identify and define key concepts in physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science
•    Apply the scientific method to real-world problems
•    Analyze data using graphs, charts, and models
•    Evaluate issues like climate change, energy use, and health decisions using evidence-based reasoning
•    Communicate scientific ideas clearly and confidently

Who Should Enroll

•    Non-science majors seeking foundational science literacy
•    Students preparing for specialized science courses
•    Adult learners and professionals exploring STEM
•    Anyone curious about how science explains everyday phenomena

Course Format

•    Delivery: Online (Asynchronous)
•    Duration: 10 weeks
•    Units: 4.0
•    Prerequisites: No prior background in physics, chemistry, biology, or earth science is necessary. Basic algebra and comfort with interpreting graphs or numerical relationships will be helpful, but advanced math is not required.

Transferring for College Credit

Credit earned in Extended Studies courses may lead to the award of a formal certificate by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies or be applied toward an academic degree or professional credential, subject to the approval of the receiving institution(s).
