Fundamentals of Employee Benefits

Benefits, especially employee health plans, are an important part of any total rewards package. Benefit costs are increasing rapidly and unpredictably, creating a challenge to HR professionals. Learn the basics about how to design, evaluate, implement, and administer employee benefits that are relevant to employees, cost-effective for the company, and competitive enough to attract and retain workers. This class will cover the many types of benefits available, the regulatory environment, compliance requirements, selecting the best partners to meet your benefit goals, and important trends in the marketplace.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Explain the range of employer-sponsored benefit plans and analyze how these benefits contribute to a comprehensive compensation strategy for attracting and retaining talent.
  • Describe the fundamental features of medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, and compare how these plans address different employee needs.
  • Communicate benefits-related information using clear, accessible language that is tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Apply federal and state regulations to ensure organizational compliance with government guidelines for group benefits.
