Building LLM-Powered Applications
CSE-X414.22
Build Intelligent Applications with Large Language Models
Large language models (LLMs) are transforming how modern software applications are built. This hands-on course teaches you how to integrate LLMs into real-world web applications using industry-standard development tools and cloud services.
Building on your existing knowledge of AI and machine learning, you’ll learn practical techniques for LLM application development, including prompt engineering, conversational AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), multimodal LLMs, structured outputs, tool calling, LLM evaluation, and responsible AI deployment. Through guided, instructor-led demonstrations and hands-on projects, you’ll start with working application code and add LLM capabilities yourself. You’ll work with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Supabase, GitHub, VS Code, and Google Gemini, while also exploring the broader LLM provider landscape.
The course emphasizes building rather than simply learning concepts. By the end, you’ll have designed and built an end-to-end LLM-powered application featuring retrieval, evaluation, and a safety layer—giving you a portfolio-ready project that demonstrates practical Generative AI development skills.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand the capabilities, limitations, and tradeoffs of large language models and select appropriate models and APIs for different applications.
- Integrate LLMs into web applications using a secure backend architecture.
- Apply prompt engineering techniques, including system prompts, few-shot prompting, chain-of-thought, and structured outputs.
- Build conversational AI features with streaming responses and conversation history.
- Implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to connect LLMs with your own data.
- Use embeddings, vector databases, chunking, and retrieval to build grounded AI applications.
- Integrate multimodal LLMs to process images and documents.
- Implement structured extraction and function/tool calling.
- Compare RAG and fine-tuning and understand when each approach is appropriate.
- Evaluate LLM responses using practical techniques such as LLM-as-judge.
- Apply responsible AI practices to address hallucinations, prompt injection, and unsafe outputs.
- Design and build an end-to-end LLM-powered application that incorporates retrieval, evaluation, and a safety layer.
