Copy Editing with Associated Press Style (WCWP-40335)

This class takes a deep dive into The Associated Press Stylebook, also known as the AP Stylebook. The AP Stylebook is widely used by newspapers and magazines, corporations for their personal websites and blogs, marketing/public relations departments, and communications departments at universities, hospitals, and other organizations.
In the course you will learn how AP style differs from The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) (the two most common stylebooks in the editing industry that editors should be familiar with). You will obtain a working knowledge of how to effectively use the online AP Stylebook, and get more practice editing different types of material through weekly editing exercises. You will participate in weekly guided discussions with the instructor and your classmates for how to become a more concientious copy editor.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will have the following:
- Learned the basics of Associated Press style.
- Learned the biggest differences between the AP Stylebook and The Chicago Manual of Style.
- Obtained a working knowledge of how to use the AP Stylebook and find entries.
- Be comfortable editing using AP style.

- Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (the free version online)
