Beginning Readers: Process to Practice

All multiple subject teachers need to be aware of how the reading process relates to their classroom or subject areas in the K-8 classroom. Topics include the process of learning a language, reading for the bilingual/bicultural pupil, a historical perspective on reading, reading readiness, models of reading instruction, reading as decoding, reading as comprehension, phonics, reading and learning disabilities, study skills, and modality and cognitive style as related to the teaching/learning process.

CCTC Requirement

This course fulfills the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirement for developing English language skills for beginning readers and is often a requirement for adding authorizations. A copy of the syllabus and an official UC San Diego DES transcript may be required for credentialing purposes.

*This course does not waive or fulfill the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) requirement. There is currently no option to meet the RICA requirement through coursework. Please see more information directly from the CTC here
