This course will provide information for knowledge of basic skills required to perform effectively as a Career Advisor. Career advisors help focus clients’ skills, interests and values, while teaching them how to gather information about workplace options and helping them develop strategies to reach their career goals. A Career Advisor has a responsibility not only to help clients learn and grow to be successful, but also to keep learning themselves. Career Development takes into account a wide range of information from many diverse areas. The Career Advisor with current information, skilled at their role and with a great attitude has the ability to impact and make a difference in the lives of many!

Ivan Melchor
Ivan Melchor is a seasoned Career Services and Project Management Professional, currently serving as a Development Specialist III with Riverside County's Workforce Development Department. With over 13 years of experience spanning academia, apprenticeships, and career advising, he brings plenty of experience and professionalism to the classroom. Ivan holds a Master's of Science Degree in Management & Leadership, and has led initiatives in Apprenticeship Development, Program Development, Career Advising, and Workforce Development.
At Riverside County WDD, he has led the I-REN Green Energy Jobs Initiative, RivCO Apprenticeship Program development, and supporting other departments. His professional practice is complemented by strong Career Advising and Leadership experience, having taught workshops, corporate training, and developing new training programs at UCR Extension. He also served at UCR University Extension for four and a half years before transitioning to Riverside County WDD.
Ivan’s teaching philosophy emphasizes active, applied learning: he designs courses that blend theory with case studies, hands-on exercises, and industry insights to prepare students for immediate impact in their professional roles. He is excited to join UC San Diego Extension in delivering high-value education that bridges theory and practice.
