Candidates will review research pertaining to language & literacy instruction and intervention, the use of print, media, & digital resources, learn the normal progression of complexity for components of literacy instruction and how to instruct for each component, learn the implications of delays or differences in students’ literacy development, assess for intervention and modify curriculum to address student needs. Candidates will plan a lesson of formal literacy instruction that is sequential, linguistically logical, systematic, explicit, differentiated, and based upon formal and informal assessments of individual students’ progress.
This course is part of the following California Commission on Teacher Credentialing program(s): Reading Instruction
Note: This is the forth required course for the Reading & Literacy Authorization program. The prerequisites for this course are EDUC 80012, EDUC 31415, and EDUC 31416. This course is a prerequisite for EDUC 31418.
You must register for this course with the Letter Grade Option. If you do not then you will need to retake the course at your own expense with the Letter Grade in order to be eligible for a Reading & Literacy Authorization or the UC San Diego Reading Instruction Certificate.

Harriet A Levine received a M.A. in Reading & Literacy and an M.Ed. in Multicultural Studies. Levine has many years of teaching experience in K-12 schools, and for the past 5 years, has worked in higher education. She has been an elementary classroom teacher in Los Angeles and Goleta, and from 1986 - 2008 was a reading specialist in The Goleta Union School District. Levine worked with student teachers and interns as a clinical supervisor at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles, and now works as a support provider for clear credential candidates at UCLA. Currently, in addition to teaching for UC San Diego Extension, Harriet has a private practice as a reading specialist.
