Paralegal Career Success

Learn the practical skills and experiences that are critical to be an excellent paralegal. The course will center on launching a successful job search campaign. Best practices in career development and job search strategies will be covered, including resume preparation, self-marketing principles, networking, interviewing skills and career enhancement resources. Topics will also include principles of law firm profitability and the paralegal's role in the profit formula, and current licensing and ethical issues. Instruction includes interviewing and interpersonal skills.

Course Format

This is a Live Online Synchronous course, with web-based class lectures scheduled to meet at published dates and times.  UC San Diego Extended Studies operates in Pacific Standard Time and therefore all class meetings and deadlines are held to Pacific Standard Time (PST).
Attendance is required for all meetings, regardless of the time zone in which you reside.  

Enrollment Policy: Students must be offically accepted and enrolled in the Paralegal Certificate Program in order to take this course. General interest enrollments prohibited.

Lauren Bloodworth
Lauren Bloodworth is the Director of Operations for the Business Real Estate Group at Kimball, Tirey & St. John LLP, where she manages the administration and operations for a team of 50+ employees across four offices statewide. With over 20 years in legal management, Lauren has a deep understanding of what legal employers look for in top talent. Her career has focused on the full lifecycle of legal professionals, from recruiting and onboarding to long-term professional development and performance coaching for paralegals and support staff.

Lauren is also an active member of the San Diego Chapter, Association of Legal Administrators, where she is a past president, and now serves as Business Partner Relations Chair and Co-Chair of Couture for a Cause, an annual fundraising event that brings the legal community together to support youth-focused nonprofits across San Diego. Lauren holds a Human Resources Certificate from UC San Diego Extended Studies and a B.A. from San Diego State University, with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy. She is deeply passionate about mentoring and helping others reach their professional goals.

Christopher Carr
Chris Carr is the Career Services Manager for Business and Legal Programs with UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies. After graduating from UC Berkeley and earning his master’s degree from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, Chris returned to his hometown of San Diego and has spent over a decade working with college-level, adult, and continuing education students to advance in their careers, prepare for and transition into new roles, and unlock their full professional potential.
 
The building blocks of a successful job search include a solid resume and cover letter, and a clean social media presence. But Chris also believes in using these elements to tell powerful stories that connect with your audience. Whether you're talking with an interviewer, an attorney, or a client, communicating in a clear and concise manner helps cultivate human connection, which aids in landing the job, delivering on workplace expectations, or uncovering key details for a case. In this course, we will discuss foundational elements of job search success, but also practice crafting an engaging narrative that capitalizes on the courses and training students have acquired in the Paralegal program.
 
Chris enjoys learning about his students’ professional interests and motivations to better serve them and connecting with employers and HR professionals to help fulfill their employment needs.
