Be a part of the future when you take Medical Translation for Internal Medicine, a specialized course which examines technical terminology related to the field of internal medicine. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 19 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Medical Translation is a ten week study of medical translation in theory and practice and prepares you to enter this dynamic and robust field. Emphasis will be placed on understanding basic anatomy, physiology, and pathology as they apply to the translation of medical information. In this course, you will apply conceptual knowledge, scientific terminology and translation techniques to mid-register, Spanish to English and\or English to Spanish, medical translations. You will be guided on how to use the scientific writing style required in medical translation, with an emphasis on developing a conceptual framework and cogent bicultural approach to the translation of medical literature. In addition, you will gain a basic understanding of medical concepts and terminology in: cardiology; pulmonology; respiratory; and internal medicine through lectures and practical exercises, quizzes and discussions.

Prerequisite: In order to register for this course, you must have had a successful completion of the Entrance Exam, "Introduction to Translation," "Theory & Practice of Translation," "Spanish to English Translation I," and "English to Spanish Translation I" Elective for the Professional Certificate in Translation and Interpretation.

Woods, Michael
Michael Woods teaches in both the Spanish for Healthcare Professionals and the Translation & Interpretation Certificate programs. Michael is a Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (CCHI) and also completed a Professional Certificate in Translation & Interpretation. He holds a Master of Arts in Contemporary Hispanic/Latino Studies and completed doctoral coursework in Spanish sociolinguistics with a focus on Central American voseo in the US. He has taught college-level courses for more than 15 years and has worked as a healthcare interpreter since 2017. Prior to teaching, interpreting, and translating, he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras, which laid the groundwork for his career in language instruction and language access.
