The primary goal of this course is to assist students to express their thoughts and experiences on diverse topics such as talking to their seniors by showing respect, returning, and exchanging merchandise, reporting incidents to police, giving, and understanding directions, etc. To achieve this goal, students are encouraged to experiment with their original discourses, while they review grammar such as particles, verb-conjugations, and formal and informal speeches. Students will have plenty of opportunities to practice role-plays and have free conversations with their classmates and instructor.

Wong, Yoko
Yoko Maruyama Wong is a native of Kanazawa, Japan. She earned her M.A. in Applied Linguistics at Ohio University. Yoko has over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring Japanese to all ages both in Japan and in the U.S. She had taught Japanese at Kent State University, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Mesa College, and Southwestern College. In her classroom, she connects content to students’ real-life experiences. Besides teaching Japanese, Yoko enjoys writing Japanese calligraphy, gardening, hiking, and yoga.
