CPT/HCPCS Coding
MEDC-40020
This online course prepares students for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) coding accreditation examinations, as well as the American Health Information Management Associate (AHIMA) coding accreditation examinations. Students will learn how to read and interpret clinical documentation, apply coding guidelines and use their medical knowledge to assign CPT codes appropriately.
Note: This course is intended for individuals pursuing the Medical Coding Certificate Program and requires previous Coding knowledge in order to enroll.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Navigate the CPT codebook and identify the uses of the conventions, index, numeric section, and appendices.
- Recognize modifiers that can be appended to CPT procedure codes, as well as identify when their use is appropriate.
- Calculate and assign CPT Evaluation and Management codes.
- Identify the meaning and purposes of procedural code audits and how to apply them.
- Apply the guidelines for the six main sections of the CPT.
- Assign codes from each of the six main sections of the CPT.
- Identify the uses of CPT Category II and Category III codes.
- Navigate the HCPCS Level II codebook and apply its contents, including the conventions, index, tabular list, levels of use, Table of Drugs and Biologicals, and appendices.
- Describe the use of coding guidelines and reporting requirements.
- Practice case studies and more complex code assignments using CPT and HCPCS Level II codes.
- Review examples of RBRVS, APCs, ASCs, and E/M services.

Instructor: Jessica Ciccone
Ms. Jessica Ciccone is a seasoned health information management (HIM) professional with more than 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry. She began her career as an accounts specialist for Scripps Healthcare before moving into provider credentialing, healthcare human resources management and revenue cycle management with Vericare in 2005.
During her time with Vericare, Ms. Ciccone led the company’s NPI structure development, and was actively involved in the development of Vericare’s personnel management workflow. Ms. Ciccone went on to obtain her master’s degree in business administration and later obtained a master’s level certification in health information management from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
In 2012, Ms. Ciccone established Health-Med Reimbursement Systems, a successful medical coding, billing and education consulting company focused on the needs of the small practice. In 2013, after completing her HIM degree, she joined Peak Health Solutions as the company’s education and training manager. In her role with Peak, she oversaw Peak’s internal coding staff education initiatives, including the ICD-10 transition preparedness program for approximately 350 inpatient, outpatient and pro-fee coders and auditors.
In 2017, Ms. Ciccone became the director of onboarding and employee engagement at ComplexCare Solutions and has been an Extension instructor since early 2017.
